Can burn DVD but not CD with K3B

I am curious about a problem I have been having with K3B on slack 12.

I have been able to burn DVDs with no problem but when burning a regular CD it always craps out on me giving only a possible buffer underrun error and suggesting I lower burn speed.

I tried adding myself to the cdrom group but that did nothing. (I'm not using HAL so I wasn't there already)

I have now got it to work by creating a burning group and adding myself to that, and checking the "use burning group option in setup".

I'm wondering why it worked fine with DVDs though???

Permissions are set as follows

cdrdao 4710 root:burning
cdrecord 4710 root:burning
growisofs 750 root:burning

k3b 755 root:burning

I am also wondering if it is OK that cdrdao and cdrecord are setUID. Is this necessary?

Sorry if I'm not being very clear here but I'm just trying to verify if I am using this program correctly and securely.

Thanks in advance for any clarifications.

K3B has a setup utility that will find the various programs it uses for creating discs. It also has a button to tell it to adjust the permissions of these programs. IIRC, it changes them to 4755, which is suid, so that non-root users can use them. I had this same problem after upgrading to Slackware 12 (cdrtools, actually).

Easiest fix would be to add yourself to the cdrom group, then in K3B go to the System->Security Permissions menu and change the group to cdrom and you'll be able to burn cd's. Not meaning to be rude, but you really should have searched here for this problem because there are already numerous threads about it with the solution.
