can burn DVD's but not cd's...SOLVED

in slackware-10.2...i get this error message whenever i try to burn a cd =

Track 01: 0 of 580 MB written.cdrecord: Input/output error. write_g1: scsi sendcmd: no error

cdrecord: Make sure that you are root, enable DMA and check your HW/OS set up.

But i have no problem with writing DVD's ...

I have another machine running slack 10.0 .....burns fine .
So i googled a lot and learned about using the hdparm command although i have all the DMA i need... UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 *udma2 is part of the output of hdparm -i /dev/hdc .The driveropts=burnfree option did not help either .

I have a spare hard drive so just out of curiosity i installed slack-10.0 on it and.... it worked fine i burned a whole cd ( data )no problem...the cdrom is " LG - DVDRAM-model-4082b "
I was wondering if anybody had a similar problem , if worse comes to worst i will just install 10.0 on this machine also but i would like to keep this here installation ( 10.2 ).

I also uninstalled cdrtools and intalled the 10.0 version (2.00) to no avail , i just got a slightly different error message so i reinstalled the original version for slack-10.2...strange problem is it not ? I even tried Mandriva...with the same results ..and yes i even tried xcdroast in slack ...no go.....thank you

are you using K3b to burn this?

to my mind it seems like the setup programme has possibly not changed the permissions properly.

do it work as root? i guess that would be a good test....

also which kernel do you use?

Hello satinet , i usually burn as root although i gave xcdroast a try in slack-10.2 default kernel 2.4.31

In Mandriva 2005 i tried both as root and with k3b with the same result...those gui burners are just front-ends for cdrecord ,right ?
And mandriva came with kernel 2.6.13 i think....2.6 for sure.

Once i installed slack 10.0 with the default kernel also i could burn both DVD's and CD's.....a bit puzzling is it not ? thanks for the help again

nutronix,
what programme are you using to burn cd/dvd...I'm very surprised you can burn DVD's with the standard cdrecord, unless you installed pro_dvd binary....
Can you tell something more ?
Ciao

From the command line : growisofs -Z /dev/cdrom -R -J /file or directory....and to append more data = -M in place of -Z
as a rule i do not use the gui tools for burning .

solved

I scoured the net for an answer to this one....lots of similar threads-problem....no dice ...

The error message gave me a hint , something about "invalid address"..
hummmm.....might have nothing to do with my inability to burn cd's ,

Just before i reinstall 10.0 (cdrecord was working fine in 10.0) i moved the jumper on the drive from M to C , cable select ....and yesss it worked
