I'm using Slackware 12.2 and gphoto2 to fetch my photos from my Canon digital camera.

Previuosly, when I had Slack 11, the thing went through hotplug, but now it's HAL.

Problem is, it works like a charm when I'm root. I plug in and turn on the camera, then just "gphoto2 -P" and I've got my pics. But as my normal user, it gives an error.

I've searched the web and gphoto2's docs are the closest I've come to an explanation, which say a lot, really...

Any help greatly appreciated!

To which groups does your user belong to?

Make sure that he's in group "plugdev" to be able to access removable media.

Use the following command to add the group to your user:

You need to add udev rules for your camera so correct permissions will be set when you plug in camera.

That's the exact gphoto2 docs (sorry I should have linked) that I was referring to. I can't for my life get anything out of them. To me, they're merely telling me what the setup already looks like in Feodora Core. When I check my (Slackware) system I find that I already got those scripts except the last one mentioned in the doc, so I added it but never found the line calling it, and that's where I am now.

Then I tried as root and thought it should be just fixing some (normal) permissions.

Anyway, I'm not at my Linux box right now, so I can't reply better than this for the moment. Will take care of it soon. Thanks for the replies.

I know I tried to add my user in the /etc/group file, but I don't know if that made it, or if it was the gpasswd command. Anyhow, I knew it should be easy.
