Can't Print with CUPS on Slackware-11.0
Hello,
I cannot get my printer to work with CUPS. I have trawled around the web for answers but I am no further forward. Having installed CUPS I can get access to the admin functions, as root, using my browser. The printer, an HP Photosmart 7350, appears to install without error. If I click on 'Print Test Page' and check the completed job, the system tells me the print has been aborted. If I click on 'Restart Job' I get an error message 'client-error-not-possible'. The following is the output from /var/log/cups/error_log I [18/Jan/2007:15:50:30 +0000] Listening to 0:631 I [18/Jan/2007:15:50:30 +0000] Loaded configuration file "/etc/cups/cupsd.conf" I [18/Jan/2007:15:50:30 +0000] Configured for up to 100 clients. I have tried Alien Bob's trimmed down version, and tried modifying it myself, but the result is the same every time. Any thoughts? Thanks Kelman |
Do you have KDE installed? I know it seems like a shortcut, but the best way I've found to set up any printer is the Kprinter dialog. It usually does everything for setup. Then you can go into the localhost:631 and modify things if you prefer that route.
In your web-trawling, did you trawl www.linuxprinting.org? It's highly trawlworthy. Joel |
The kdelibs package that comes with Slackware 11.0 has a bug that causes printing to not work. Try upgrading the kdelibs with a patched version.

You printer on openprinting.org ... good place to start.

Huh?

My mistake. I was distracted by work when I wrote that. 11 comes with kde-3.5.4 and the bug is in 3.5.5.
Kelman, since your printer is made by HP you might want to try the hplip package if you haven't already. http://www.linuxpackages.net/pkg_details.php?id=9976 Be sure to read the installation instructions first and restart the cups server after starting the hplip service. Then do as trashbird1240 suggests and use KDE's print manager to add your printer. |
Good one Dracolich; that could do it.
By the way, your signature is an insult to Etch-a-Sketch ;) Joel |
