can't mount /home after app failure and error trying to reboot

my home partition dissappeareda after aff an application failed to run its task successfully. the program froze when i tried to close it - did not respond to "killall" command and subsequently affected the browsers that were open in that particular workstation. i exited the x system and went to reboot, there was an immediate error message and the computer froze. i hit the reset manually, expecting a scan of my hard disks. the system was and is unable to mount the /home partition at all. running e2fsck returns

Quote:
Couldn't find ext2 superblock, trying backup blocks...
e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sdb

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
my fstab entries are fine.

dmesg returns:

You might try running testdisk to see if you can repair the partition table.

Code:
EXT2-fs: Couldn't read superblock on 2nd try.

This makes me think you have a bad superblock on the file system try some recovery efforts or a backup if you have one.

a e2fsck on the parttion might not be a bad idea

If you ever get it back, convert that bad boy to EXT3. Ext2 is just asking for headache.

EXT2-fs: Couldn't read superblock on 2nd try.
This part looks like the drive is suffering hardware failure. I would first check the cable connections inside the machine. If that doesn't help then boot a liveCD distro and run e2fsck -cfv to force a verbose check and look for bad blocks, then backup anything you can so you can replace the drive.

If you put a filesystem without a partition directly onto /dev/sdb, slap yourself now.

...otherwise, you typo'd in your /etc/fstab somehow. If it's trying to mount /dev/sdb as /home, change that to /dev/sdb1.
