can't mount CD-ROM and question about fstab

Hi Everyone,

I just installed Slackware 12 and the default /etc/fstab file has the cdrom commented out like so,
" #/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,owner,ro 00 ".

How come the cdrom is commented out after the installation?

When I try to mount the cdrom as root the output is,
"mount: can't find /mnt/cdrom in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab ".

Before posting I did a search on this forum for "#/dev/cdrom" but didn't find something about this particular question. I also read the "12.0 and HAL - READ THIS!" sticky. If the answer is in there I didn't get it.

Thank you in advance for your help and time.

~L.

slackware 12.0 ships with HAL to automatically handle removeable media.
if you remove the hash ("uncomment" the line) everything should work as before.

Thank you.

Below is my original and unedited fstab file that came with the default Slackware 12 installation.

/dev/hda1 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/hda2 / ext3 defaults 1 1
#/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,owner,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0

Does that mean after every Slackware 12 install I need to uncomment that line to make it read as,
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,owner,ro 0 0

Thank you again.

Hi,

I put the comment back in fstab.
And added myself to the plugdev group.

Thank you again for your help!

No. It means you should read the RELEASE_NOTES file that is on the cd (or mirror), which then refers you to CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT. If it's still not clear at that point, then ask.

Hi,

I thought I read the entire text but I didn't.
Thanks for the advice.
