boot linux mediacheck or do an md5sum on the CDs

Got it to install, but can't even get X up. None of the drivers that I've used before are giving a display now (no errors). I'm giving up on linux.

Slackware isn't exactly a newbie distro, so I wouldn't let that discourage me completely.

Instead of giving up on Linux, have you thought about a Linux "live CD" such as the KNOPPIX Linux Live CD?

Hello, am I the only one thinking "possible hardware fault with the CD-ROM drive itself?"

Let's see:

1. Intermittent fault with mounting the drive
2. Unable to reinstall from two different CDs using the drive
3. Eventual install not 'successful'-- possibly due to data not transferring fully from the CD?

To me, this indicates that one should at least try replacing the drive temporarily to see if it itself isn't the problem.

Am I nuts?
