can't mount a samba share I made from Ubuntu

ok...
I would like to mount my samba share from my Ubuntu laptop so that I could access my shared files like the rest of my Windows computers.Read the manuals, looked at the millions of options and did a series of steps to no avail. I have tried to make this clear and will make it clearer if suggested, any updates or information needed I will edit this post accordingly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanking in advance.

After this sentence the series of significant steps I took follow:

The first thing I did was to check if samba could find my share

Code:
findsmb
Can't load /etc/samba/smb.conf - run testparm to debug it

                                *=DMB
                                +=LMB
IP ADDR NETBIOS NAME WORKGROUP/OS/VERSION
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Can't load /etc/samba/smb.conf - run testparm to debug it
1xx.xxx.1.xx THE-HERON +[WORKGROUP] [Unix] [Samba 3.0.28a]
bash-3.1$
second thing was to attempt to mount the drive Anyone knows this enough well to do it please help me here dont exactly know what i am doing

So I went to http://www.justlinux.com/nhf/Filesys...rmanently.html

I learnt: or more like just tried to subsitute
Code:
mount -t smbfs //servername/sharename /mountdirectory -o username=mywindowsusername,password=mywindowspassword
so then I tried:
Code:
bash-3.1# mount -t smbfs //THE-HERON/stuff /mnt/mongoose -o username=mongoose,password=thatpassword
I resulted in:
Code:
bash-3.1# mount -t smbfs //THE-HERON
/stuff /mnt/mongoose -o username=mongoose,password=thatpassword
params.c:OpenConfFile() - Unable to open configuration file "/etc/samba/smb.conf":
	No such file or directory
Can't load /etc/samba/smb.conf - run testparm to debug it
3729: session setup failed: ERRDOS - ERRnoaccess (Access denied.)
SMB connection failed
In windows and probably from another ubuntu installation(didnt try), I would require no password but I just had it in there just incase.

Indeed, if I didnt need any password I would do:
Code:
bash-3.1# mount -t smbfs //THE-HERON/stuff /mnt/mongoose -o username=guest
resulted in:
Code:
bash-3.1# mount -t smbfs //THE-HERON/stuff /mnt/mongoose -o username=guest
params.c:OpenConfFile() - Unable to open configuration file "/etc/samba/smb.conf":
	No such file or directory
Can't load /etc/samba/smb.conf - run testparm to debug it
Password:
3732: tree connect failed: ERRDOS - ERRnosuchshare (You specified an invalid share name)
SMB connection failed
bash-3.1#
So, according to this result, I needed a password, a password that I don't know of.

So I assumed, that if I had a Graphical User Interface for browsing all the Samba shares. I would be able to access it like my Windows and Ubuntu computers.

I downloaded xSMBrowser

I dug through its directory and found three files
Code:
bash-3.1# cd xsmbrowser-3.4.0
bash-3.1# ls
INSTALL pixmaps xsmbrowser
bash-3.1#
the INSTALL file stated
Quote:
Before you read the rest of this, just try executing "xsmbrowser" to see
if it works. Since xsmbrowser is an expectk script, there is nothing to
compile. If you run into any problems, read on ...
So I did run the xsmbrowser

clicked on Samba Config, pulled all the bells and whistles. I couldn't find any shares.

So I referred to the INSTALL.

Quote:
If you have Redhat or another respectable distribution of Unix, then Samba
may already be setup. One way to check is to issue "ps -A" (as root), and
if the programs "smbd" and "nmbd" are running, then you're okay.
So I ran ps -A

Couldn't find smbd nor nmbd.

I have actually done more research and investigation over the past 4 hours. I believe they aren't significant.

Side Question:
At first it was named my share so I thought calling it my\ share would be awkward and go against my probability of accessing my samba share.I renamed it from nautilus on my Ubuntu laptop. I didn't mount the share back on. I didnt try to rename the mounted share. Does that change anything? Would it still be called 'my\ share' and the samba is just merely asking for a password because it has to execute it no matter what?

Once again, any help would be appreciated.

Yes, I have also learnt that, smb.conf is not neccesary for mounting a samba share.

edit: smb.conf is a file that you can create on your own using the example available in the directory it is supposed to sit in.

I am EXTREMELY STUPID!!!!!

Okay, I am an idiot.

The side note that I mentioned was the major issue. When I actually renamed my drive to 'stuff', it stopped sharing the file! So there was a fairly simple process you would anticipate. Right-click and share as a superuser allow guest access. Then execute some the most simple codes ever.

Code:
mount -t smbfs //THE-HERON/stuff /mnt/mongoose -o username=guest
Voila! I was there! Now I can access all my documents and music that are floating in the air at this moment!!!

Hope this comes to any use. I might post another one to see how it goes as to having the share mount automatically everytime in the etc/fstab or something.

However, there is a problem... I have created links in the drive. Can anyone tell me how to open these links in slackware? Any program suggested?
