For me it isn't about the availability or simplicity, it's about the either/or manner of display in ncurses menuconfig vs/ the simoultaneous display in xconfig. I don't always agree with everything Eric recommends but the percentage is quite high and I very much agree with how he builds custom kernels including using xconfig, avoiding initrd, and enabling performance options.

But, regardless, the same information is available on both, just how it is accessed/viewed is different.
