can't make may modem work

hello
I have a US Robotics isa modem in COM3 (the good one, no the winmodem) and I don't know how to make work on slack, I'm using MDK right now and it works perfectly (I just had to select ttyS2, no extra configuration). someone told me that isapnp can solve the problem, but I just dont get how (I'm a complete newbie). a kernel compilation may be the answer? if it is, what should I look for especifically when I configure the new kernel?

thank you and sorry, my english sucks

Could you tell what happens when it won't work? i.e. What error messages pop up in your face?

kppp tells me the modem is busy (same thing that happened with may old sm56 modem), the command ppp-go doesn't even respond

Are you sure your jumpers are set correctly. One time I did that, battled my modem for months, only to find out that my jumpers were not set correctly.

apparently everything's ok with the jumpers, in MDK it works fine and I tried it with Vector linux and it also worked well. I suspect it can be related with PNP stuff (I have a isa soundcard and it gave some trouble too in slack) but im not sure

Since linux likes modems that are on ttys1(com2), set your modem for com2, irq3. It will no longer be pnp.

I have a US Robotics 5610 pci modem. Plug and Play set it up as ttyS4. To get it working
as root this is what worked for me. I left the jumpers alone.

1) rm /dev/modem
2) ln -s /dev/ttyS4 /dev/modem
3) As user set kppp to use /dev/modem
