can't launch apps from start button, folder view, run command

several apps in folder view, firefox, htop, dolphin, etc., sometimes won't start

alt-f2, program name, enter, nothing

start button, select random app, nothing

systray items like calendar, device notifier, clipboard will pop open when clicked, I can change desktops

exit KDE, startx, everything works as normal

htop was running another desktop, clicked on htop in folder view, message box said 'KDEinit could not launch /usr/bin/htop'

Used to be able to have KDE up for days without issue, I can exit and startx but I'm just curious as to what might be happening.

Thanks

Your descriptions are pretty vague.
Full installation of Slackware? Which version?
Alt+F2 should be case-sensetive.
Are you sure things aren't trying to start but your system is bogged down by low specs or akonodai/nepomuk running full blast?
When you experience these problems in the main menu ("start button"?) have you tried launching anything from a terminal emulator?
Any disk activity take place after attempting to launch a program?

full version slackware 64 14.1, core i5, 16G memory

System is not bogged down, I've had xp, slack 32 14.1 running at same time in vbox, surfing the web with 4 active BOINC projects and have not noticed any system slow down.

alt+f2, type kcalc, KCalc Scientific Calculator appears, click on it, nothing happens

I cannot run any app from folder view, run command, start button, so I can't open a terminal emulator.

You know how you get bouncy icon when you start say firefox? I don't even get that.

Hi STDOUBT, thanks for checking back, as I said before, can't run anything from anywhere, can't open a terminal to run firefox, that was one of first things I tried.

Think I'm going do something like top -bn1, as system is stable, then maybe ssh top -bn1 again and see if there's any difference, like you said before, something hogging the system or some unfinished task locking things up.
