can't kill a tar creation process over nfs and vpn

hello everyone,
i mounted a file system on another computer connected to local net through vpn..
file sharing is done with nfs

i wanted to tar a huge folder from there.. to this pc in the local net...
so did
Quote:
tar cvf scratch.tar /mnt/nfs/scratchbox/
the tar'ing seems to start fine but after a while it stopped..
ps aux shows
Quote:
root 14420 0.0 0.0 3296 1152 ? D 14:08 0:00 tar cvf scratch.tar /mnt/nfs/scratchbox/
yet trying to kill the application fails.
i trying stopping the nfs and vpn services and i still can't get it to be killed -9..
what can i do...

any clues y it failed? to mind comes the vpn connection that comes over UDP.. and i know UDP does not try to send again packets... so is it possible that some packet was lost and tar got confused?

I haven't used nfs in a while, but I used to have problems with large files. How big is the file in question? I also have had problems tarring large files. I hate to say it, but my issues were resolved simply mounting using cifs, and then I was able to tar and copy away never having any more issues. I know thats probably not the answer you were looking for, but I hope it helps a little.

can't mount rw a certain folder over nfs

hm while at it... i tried swapping the nfs server and client...
and i can't seem to mount rw a folder on the current client .. i think the problem lies on the server side.. but i think i did everything:

/etc/exports

Quote:
#expose the shares in the local net and a vpn net
/mnt/lvm/ 192.168.144.0/255.255.255.0(rw,sync)
/mnt/lvm/ 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0(rw,sync)
/tmp/ 192.168.144.0/255.255.255.0(rw,sync)
/tmp/ 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0(rw,sync)
/etc/hosts.allow
Quote:
ALL: 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0
ALL: 192.168.144.0/255.255.255.0

/etc/hosts.deny

Quote:
portmap:ALL
lockd:ALL
mountd:ALL
rquotad:ALL
statd:ALL
and i restarted rc.nfs...

then i
Quote:
mount 192.168.144.1:/mnt/lvm/ /mnt/nfs_mount/ -o rw
(the -o rw just for assurance)

and i can't write into /mnt/nfs_mount (mkdir or create a file etc..)

note that if i mount /tmp instead of /mnt/lvm ... i can write normally...

the thing is lvm is an array of disks that i have merged together with logical volume manager utilities... i am initialising this array in fstab as

Quote:
#LVM_disks node
/dev/lvm_disks/lvm_node /mnt/lvm reiserfs defaults 1 2
also ls -l /mnt/ gives

Quote:
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 104 2007-10-12 16:16 lvm/
so i should be able to write into it.... no?
what am i doing wrong here???
should i mount the lvm array in a different manner??
