Can't find user id

user id not found, sum program dont run because user id cant be found . i get this in aterm
I have no name!@sirhand:~$.......... also sound server not werking . but i still get sound. any idea's anybody......

When I try to login as any user I get the message "id: cannot find name for
user ID", but I get to the user's home directory, though.
If I run ls -l, I get the group name and the uidNumber instead of the
username. It is being able to retrieve the group name but not the username.

I found the problem its permissions on ma /etc/passwrd N /etc/group
But im stumped any have the right chmod code to reset too username?

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root <snip> /etc/passwd
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root <snip> /etc/group

... on a stock slack (just like they should be I'd think).

Indeer as ogmoid says, do NOT make the passwd and group file world WRITABLE... and the X bit is needless as well.

make it 'chmod 644' and you will be fine and secure.
