Above, I'm trying to select a mirror as root...why can't I get into the file? I've added myself to all the normal groups.

I bet you are starting your Slackware machine in runlevel 4, that means graphical login? It's common then. If you start in runlevel 3, root can without a problem start applications on the X server, in runlevel 4 not. You will have to fiddle with xhost and/or ~/.Xauthority to give root the permissions. Or use nano instead
