can't connect to xserver?

Code:
bash-3.1# kate /etc/slackpkg/mirrors
No protocol specified
kate: cannot connect to X server :0.0
bash-3.1#
Above, I'm trying to select a mirror as root...why can't I get into the file? I've added myself to all the normal groups.

thanks

I bet you are starting your Slackware machine in runlevel 4, that means graphical login? It's common then. If you start in runlevel 3, root can without a problem start applications on the X server, in runlevel 4 not. You will have to fiddle with xhost and/or ~/.Xauthority to give root the permissions. Or use nano instead

type

Code:
xhost local:root
at the bash prompt, then log in as root or better yet sudo kate to do whatever...

sometimes i get tired of vi too, but i made a .vimrc file to make it a better tool.
