Can't connect to mysql

hi!!

when i m going to run mysql returns me this.

Quote:
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
i'm going to /var/run/mysql.sock dir and the .sock file isn't there.

Then i type :

Quote:
mysql_config --socket
returns :
Quote:
/var/run/mysql/mysql.sock
but it still not being there.. :s

Any ideas on how can i run the mysql server ?

Thanks a lot !!

Have you installed the mysql database

Have you ever initialized the mysql database?

See the /etc/rc.d/rc.mysql script for details, but I think it is:

mysql_install_db --user=mysql

to get things init'd

EDIT
and of course mysql serrver must be running and /etc/rc.d/rc.mysql must have execute permission
/EDIT

Installation of system tables failed!

Examine the logs in /var/lib/mysql for more information.
You can try to start the mysqld daemon with:
/usr/libexec/mysqld --skip-grant &
and use the command line tool
/usr/bin/mysql to connect to the mysql
database and look at the grant tables:

shell> /usr/bin/mysql -u root mysql
mysql> show tables

Try 'mysqld --help' if you have problems with paths. Using --log
gives you a log in /var/lib/mysql that may be helpful.

The latest information about MySQL is available on the web at
http://www.mysql.com
Please consult the MySQL manual section: 'Problems running mysql_install_db',
and the manual section that describes problems on your OS.
Another information source is the MySQL email archive.
Please check all of the above before mailing us!
And if you do mail us, you MUST use the /usr/bin/mysqlbug script!
return this ...
