can't boot to slackware 8.1 cd rom

Hi all,

I recently downloaded and burned install cd's for slackware 8.1 from two different mirrors; one from Norway and the other from PSU. I attempted an install to a clean hard drive on with both cd's with the same result on two different systems; i can't get either of them to boot to the cd rom to start the install.

The first system is a Celeron 600 with a 10Gig IDE hard disk and 32 meg ram. The second is a Compaq Presario 14xl245 notebook with a Celeron 566, a 6Gig hard disk and 128 meg ram.

I found, copied and used rawrite to create the bare.i bootdisk as well as the no_kbd.i bootdisk (for the Celeron processors) and the color.gz rootdisk. I also made a PCMCIA supplemental disk for PCMCIA support for the laptop.

Initially i just tried to put the cd rom into the drive and boot to the cd as I've done in the past with RedHat and Mandrake distro's but got nothin'. I did a little research and made the boot and root disks and gave it a try again.

I am able to boot to both the bare.i and no_kbd.i bootdisks. At the "boot:" prompt I hit enter. When prompted I remove the bootdisk and put the rootdisk color.gz in and hit enter. At that point I get:

RAMDISK: Minix filesystem found at block 0
RAMDISK: loading 3733 blocks [3 disks] into ram disk...done disk #1
Please insert disk #2 anad press ENTER

What disk #2?! ?! I only have one disk color.gz. So I do the responsible thing and just hit enter again without any more tedious research.

Loading disk #2...done disk #2
Please insert disk #3 and press ENTER.

What the hell, it worked the first time, so I try it again!

Loading disk #3...done.
MINIX-fs: mounting unchecked file system, running fsck is recommended.
VFS: Mounted root (minix filesystem).
Freeing unused kernnel memory: 68k freed
init: error in loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I have tried a utility called DOSSLACK as well, but with no success. Once I boot to the dosslack disk all paths seem to lead to an inevitable:

WILL NOT WORK IN THIS BETA RELEASE
[YN]?
Have a nice day!
A:\>

Lovely !

If there is anyone out there with a similar problem or a fix, I would be really greatful. I have installed RedHat and Mandrake a couple of times without all this drama. There must be something simple or stupid that I am overlooking ( but not my BIOS settings, both systems will boot to cd with other OS's). Anyway, thanks for the consideration.

The probelm is probably that you computer doesn't support bootable cd's without emulation. Most older Motherboard's bios don't support this.

The problem with the root floppies is there is in fact 5 root disk images to be created.

You can get the floppy root images here:
http://www.slackware.at/data/slackware-8.1/rootdisks/

The images are install.1-5

About the bootable cd you may just need to get a new bios or a whole new computer I can't be sure. You might try reading about the UMSDOS based slackware install. The readme is in the root disk directory listing above as "install.zip.README"

I hope this help if anyone else has some suggestions please post them.
