Burning DVDs on a new DVD-RW

Hi

I have a Sony DVD-RW which I am using as my CD player as well. My /etc/fstab only lists my cdrom like this:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

I can both play audio CDs and video DVDs. I can mount data CDs at /mnt/cdrom.

I went to burn a video DVD last night and XCDRoast informed me that I needed something called ProDVD (?) which I've never heard of, don't know why I'd need it (I have all the relavant libs, etc.), and don't know where I'd get it from. So, I tried K3B which couldn't find the blank DVD. I tried mounting the DVD but it wouldn't mount, so I was wondering how this should be configured in /etc/fstab.

I am at work at present, so working from memory the DVD/CD is at sr0. Do I have to symlink the DVD/CD and how would I set this up so that I can still read CDs and play audio CDs? When mounting would this then be mount /mnt/cdrom or /mnt/dvd depending on what medium I'm using or does one size fit all?

Sorry if this is coming across as confusing. If there is any info required that will help make this more coherent, please ask and I'll provide whatever info I can.

Much obliged

Never, never use XCDroast to burn DVD media period. You should use growisofs which is part of dvd+rw-tools, with the dvd+rw-tools package installed k3b should work just fine.

Cheers Lenard - I followed the link and realise there is a fair amount of reading to be done.

I take on board your warning re: XCDRoast - why is it that this is not good for burning DVDs? I thought that it was just a front-end to the same set of tools K3B would use.

Finally, your reply did not address one of the main points of my question - i.e. whether or not I should be making an alteration in my /etc/fstab and if so, the best way to do this.

If you have any thoughts about that, that would be useful.

Cheers

Nope you should not need to change your /etc/fstab file. Your device is known and working for reading both CD and DVD media. In addition it common and normal for CD/DVD devices to be known as a cdrom device. But it might give you a 'warm feeling' if you do something like;

$ ls -al /dev/dvd
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Nov 20 08:57 /dev/dvd -> hdc

my /etc/fstab entry for my CD/DVD drive (comparison only) and the cdrecord output for example;
Code:
/dev/hdc                /media/cdrom            auto    noauto,users,ro 0 0

$ cdrecord -scanbus
Cdrecord-Clone 2.01-dvd (--) Copyright (C) 1995-2004 Jörg Schilling
Note: This version is an unofficial (modified) version with DVD support
Note: and therefore may have bugs that are not present in the original.
Note: Please send bug reports or support requests to http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla
Note: The author of cdrecord should not be bothered with problems in this version.
scsidev: 'ATA'

XCDroast uses only cdrecord to burn media and only works with CD media. Slack has the dvd+rw-tools (which needs installation) package available. You might want to remove your current k3b configuration then try again after the dvd+rw-tools package is installed.

FYI: it is kind of hard (OK not possible) to mount blank media.

Fixed

Hi Lenard

Thanks for your responses. As it turns out I was successful in being able to fix this and I did it through changing my /etc/fstab.

Originally the /etc/fstab read:

<...>
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom <...>

which I changed, simply to:

/dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom <...>

Then, I fired up K3B and burnt a DVD, easy as pie.

And as the great James Brown once sang "I feel good!"

Cheers for your input.

All the best
