Brother MFC-440cn in Slack 11?
I have a Brother MFC-440cn multifunction printer/scanner/fax device that works great on my CentOS system, but I have not been able to get it to work under Slackware. Brother provides driver (rpm files) for the lpd and cups wrapper driver (both must be installed) for Redhat systems, but I have not been able to get it to work with Slack.

I converted the rpm files to tgz, bit there appears to be too many differences between RH and Slack for the drivers to work. I also tried sharing the printer under cups on the CentOS box and trying to print through the CentOS system, but the printer just hangs while sending data, and required a power off to reset it.

Brother tech support has not been any help. If anyone has any idea how to get the printer working, it would be much appreciated.

This isn't any help, but I have a Brother 420-cn I haven't got working with Slackware. I got it working with Ubuntu and Debian, but no luck so far with Slackware. Still working on it, though.

I have found Brother's Linux support to be generally pretty good. They have rpms and deb files that can be downloaded from their website. I just can't figure out what is different about Slackware that is preventing this from working.

I have been very pleased with my Brother HL-5250dn laser printer that was very easy to get running under Slackware. I just copied the ppd file from the CDROM to /usr/share/cups/model and restarted cups. From there I was able to use the cups web config utility to get it running.

When I installed my Brother DCP-110C under Slackware, I downloaded the .rpm from the Brother website and converted to .tgz using rpm2tgz. The problem is that the install script in the rpm is written to run in a C shell rather than a bash shell. Try running the install script after opening a C shell (eg csh).
Failing that, you may have to work out what the install script is doing, and then replicate it manually.

PS I added some more detail of this in the HCL. Search for DCP-110C.

I have the Brother MFC-210C printer and downloaded and installed the driver for it but can't get it to work. The driver seem to load fine as I can configure the printer but trying to print a test page it just gets aborted and I don't get any error messages anywhere. Any ideas about what I can test to make it work?
