Broadband?

im about to install slackware on my laptop. I previously had mandrake and xp on there. i managed to get my broadband set up on xp but had problems with it in mandrake. the slackware install will be the only op on the laptop so i was wondering how hard it would be to set up broadband on there? does it do it automatically or is there playing about to do if so what do i need to do?

It will be easy and you can do it during the install.

It all depends very much on what type of connection you are actually using. If it simply comes in on your ethernet card and it's configured through DHCP, you won't have much trouble. The wonderful netconfig tool will guide you through. This is, of course, if your ethernet card is supported.
IMHO the automatic network configuration in Mandrake is pretty crappy, so I'm not surprised you were having difficulties.

I've found that Linux doesn't play nice with AOL DSL and rpppoe...well at least it doesn't like my machine set up as a gateway with NAT... I figure it had something to do with the MTU of all my interfaces on the network...but I dunno. If it's cable, I had it working wonderfully with Adelphia for 2 years with no problems.

hi hurricane
Do you need a hostname for Telewest? I've just been through my router setup and I can't find a hostname.

I never seen any ISP that need end user for hostname to connect to the internet. Hostname is just the name for your system. Setting Slackware with ADSL, DSL, AOL should be as easy as any distro esp when you configure your network to be DHCP.

However some things don't use DHCP, such as DSL, in which case the RPPPOE client works wonderfully.

you sometimes need to use the -h switch with dhcpcd.

For ntlworld in the UK my setup in my boot script (I like doing it all by hand like the 1337 h4x0r that I am ) is the following:

/sbin/dhcpcd -h username_used_at_mac_registration
