Brightness control on Slackware64, laptop (ati)

I have fglrx 9.12 installed. I can change the brightness and turn it down (it's extremely bright at default) but I need to redo this every time I reboot by doing Fn+End.

Is there anyway I can save what level of brightness I had?

try this , ex: # echo 5 > /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness , and put in /etc/rc.d/rc.local

This works but once I startx, it resets back to the very high brightness.

I been messing around with it but I'm unable to find the solution yet. The default brightness is so bright that it causes pain in the eye, I'm not sure why this happens.
