1. If you've over written the vmlinz.old, you may try copying bare.i from the kernels folder from the first slackware installation cd (you can rename it to vmliuz.old in the /boot directory). I think this would work. (remember to rund /sbin/lilo !)

2.The bootup floppy seek seems like it is in your bios settings...

3. /sbin/ldconfig does take a tad of time, I know of no way around this.

4. I'm a command line guy myself, or KDE / Enlightenment at best. I'm not sure your Gnome issues...
