bootsplash Problems

I have been trying to install the bootsplash program for Slackware 10.1. I am stuck at the part where I have to install my theme, as I have to run the following command:
Code:
splash -s -f /etc/bootsplash/themes/slack_gray/config/bootsplash-1024x768.cfg > /boot/initrd
There are no initrd files in the boot folder. What do I do? Thanks for any help.

I think the tool you're looking for is mkinitrd. There's a man page for it that tells how it works. It looks like it creates a ram disk for booting purposes.

I'd say more, but I can't profess to be much of an expert on it.

Executing that command should create initrd. Then in lilo you just tell it to use that as your splash. I don't know what all this talk of mkinitrd is about. I made my bootsplash work without such a command.

d'oh!

Right you are. I should've looked closer at that command. And here I thought I was being helpful... :/

The initrd contains scripts and drivers that are run before the root filesystem is mounted. It is particularly useful for scsi drivers, or any other driver that you might need in order to read the root partition. (filesystem module if it is not compiled in, for example)

The initial menu belongs to the boot loader (lilo or grub in most cases). There are, however, boot screens after the inital boot loader menu that are used in many distro's (SuSE for example). These have nothing to do with the boot loader at all. I don't know if they get compiled into the kernel, or if they get packaged into the initrd in some way. (I think it may have something to do with the "splash=silent" kernel command line parameter that I see in my /boot/grub/menu.lst though)

Bootsplash problems 2

Hi! I have Slackware 10.2, kernel 2.4.31. I have installed "bootsplash program" and written this lines to grub 'menu.lst'
Quote:
Bootsplash on
BootsplashConfig /etc/bootsplash/themes/Marley/config/bootsplash-1024x768.cfg
But it still doesn't works. Do you know why?
