Did you install lilo during the installation?

Have you tried reinstalling lilo?

The exact error message would help.

I have a friend well 3 friends exactly, that past the same error as you after slackware installation. they all say that during install haven't received any errors message, and yes they all install lilo. right now i can't told you how they solved the problem but they all did cause now they all running slack. i will talk to them tomorrow and ask what they did, as far i can remember they talk me about the error is cause a bad lilo installation and that man lilo give the solution. but i most ask them before so i could tell you and help.

did u install LILO to the MBR? i dunno if this makes a difference though. for some reason my computer couldn't boot when it wasn't installed to the MBR

little_ball 04-13-2004 08:26 PM

Yes did you install lilo to the mbr? that's could be a reason, or did you check if the partition root is primary? if isn't either of the above error you should do

put the CD in the CD-ROM drive and reboot, when you get to the "boot:" prompt, type "root=/dev/hda#" where # is the root partition you installed to.
the key is <name of kernel to use> root=/dev/<whatever is your root partition> ro noinitrd the last two is to initially mount the root fs read-only (so the kernel can check it), and not to load the initial ram disk (which contains the setup environment) that'll boot your installed system by using a kernel off of the CD, then you can fix your system to boot from HD. then inside your root installation edit lilo.conf, put the correct stuff in lilo.conf when you finished save it and install lilo you know /sbin/lilo and restart your box.

ive got it to boot and i think why is because when i go to install lilo i used the expert option. when i used the install lilo auto option it booted into linux but stops after that and asked for a boot disk. still working on it
thanks

i have got it working. i can only guess that the reason for not working was that i need to use the auto option for installing lilo. i dont know why but it worked. for some reason slack 9.0 wouldnt let me use the auto option. thanks for helping me

hahahaha, I fu**ing hate that one!! well, what I do- the bios is loading wrong disk. So i tell it to load the hda disk, and it all straighten up :)

ps: same happened with my bro today, he has only one disk. so I had to reinstall LILO on his comp to make it "normal" again :)

After installing Slackware 9.1 I installed the kernel to my root partition instead of to the MBR. However, when I boot up, the BIOS goes through the checks to see where to boot from and when no boot record is found it just looks like this:

checking......IDE not found
GRUB>

I know that I can just re-install the kernel to the MBR, but I would like to try something different if possible.
