Boot hangs on Freeing unused kernel memory

Hi

I've cloned a working setup of a 12.2 installation on a new PC, running huge-smp kernel

The system boot up but hangs on the message

Code:
Freeing unused kernel memory ..
I think that after this step should start init.

In fact I can't understand if it really starts. I tried to put a line which echoes a text string on top of rc.S but the string never appears, I think system hangs before executing rc.S

I tried googling about this error and I have found that this should be related to ACPI (or APM). So I tried booting with these parameters

Code:
noapic nolapic nolocalapic acpi=off apm=off
to see if the system boot but It doesn't worked.

Someone has any clue about this problem?

There is such a bug in NEWER kernels, and it's about APIC, not ACPI.
Which kernel are you using? You can see it with "uname -r".

I'm running kernel is the last one shipped in /patches for slackware 12.2, packaged as kernel-huge-smp-2.6.27.31_smp-i686-1.tgz , so it's not too much newer

I'm doing the update via SSH and I cannot enter the bios to change APIC settings , so I's like to found a software workaround to be able to do the trick without having to go the PC location

Thank you

I don't know where the error is, either. Just try the newest 2.6.27.* kernel with your current config.

Problem solved, I have made a mistake with the kernel path in lilo.conf so the system was booting with a wrong kernel.
