Boot Error: can't open /etc/ioctl.save 0_WRONLY

I installed Slackware a few days ago. I had X running and left it on overnight.

This morning I came to my computer, and the X system was working fine, except firefox froze up when I tried to load a new webpage. So I tried to reboot.

Upon rebooting, I could no longer access Slackware after the lilo menu:

Quote:
can't open /etc/ioctl.save 0_WRONLY

enter runlevel
I tried entering various runlevels but that failed.

Please help.

Your /etc/ioctl.save file may be corrupted. If you have a Slackware install disk, boot off it and get a command line. Mount your root partition with read-write. Rename /etc/ioctl.save to /etc/ioctl.save-BAK. Unmount the root partition and reboot without the install disk. I just did these steps using a Slackware CD-ROM install disk #1 on my box and /etc/ioctl.save was recreated and I was able to log back in.

Steps after booting off install disk.

# mkdir -p /mnt/rootpart
# mount -rw /dev/hda1 /mnt/rootpart
(NOTE: replace /dev/hda1 with your root partition)
# cd /mnt/rootpart/etc
# mv ioctl.save ioctl.save-BAK
# cd /
# umount /mnt/rootpart
# reboot

Good luck.
