boot- & root- disks ...ummm???
 

I've been running Slackware v9.1 for 6 months or so and I couldn't ever ever get it to boot correctly off of my harddrive, so I just stuck with the boot floppy disk that I made during installation...

This afternoon the disk stopped working and I somehow lost my backup copy of the disk when I moved back home from school.

So, I went online and got the "bare" image and used RAWRITEXP.EXE to put it on a brand new floppy.

At the "boot: " prompt, I type "mount root=/dev/hdb2" (which was correct for the previous disk) and it'll start up like usual...

THEN I get the message: "Insert root floppy disk to be loaded into RAM disk and press ENTER"

Before, I didn't need another disk...so I'm not sure exactly what this is looking for; do I need to find an 'image' for a root disk or was I supposed to do something to get around this message???

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

jmshortncsu; all that means you will have to be in root to do what u desire.
suggest making another disk that includes root(you) and viola! try it.

IF you still have syslinux installed...........type that from a term window to make a new floppy..........

Maybe a 'buggy' bootdisk, as I saw someone else complaining about this the other day. Try grabbing a bootisk image from another mirror, or from another versions tree, such as Slackware 9.1. After booting with that, do what 320MB suggested.
Penguin4, 'root disks' have NOTHING to do with the user 'root'.

gnashley; u r right, but info provided was from howto seen on howto info.
refers to being able to boot system as root, some mirror,s (as u stated) not
quite good for others. that info i had was generic.

i did end up downloading an image from a different site that specifically said "v9.1" -- i guess it was a dumb mistake not to look for that the first time, but it happens.

still trying to get X to start, but i'm getting it sorted out
