Blank screen after killing X (12.2)

Just installed 12.2, did a complete default install, I always boot in runlevel 3 and use "startx"... Fluxbox as my wm. But it doesn't seem to matter if I "Exit" from Fluxbox or ctrl+alt+backspace, slack doesn't seem to go back into commandline so that I can do a clean shutdown, or change users.

Are you using the open source 'radeon' driver by chance? If so, I have seen similar behavior on my FreeBSD and OpenBSD boxes and I believe this is due to an Xorg bug with the radeon driver. Even if you are not using radeon, I think this kind of behavior lies with Xorg.

Try this: do ctrl-alt-backspace and then try to type the commands from memory to shutdown (e.g. su, then your root password, then shutdown -h now) and see if your computer shuts down. If so, then the box is working but X is not giving you back the console after you quit your wm. I seem to recall seeing some hacks that might address this, so I'll take a look around and post back if I find anything.

I'll try doing the commands from memory and see if anything happens. But even when I would just simply do crtl+alt+del it wouldn't restart either. Or it was just taking a ridiculously long time and I wasn't able to wait...

It's not a radeon issue, I'm running it off of an ibm thinkpad t20 (breathing a little bit of life into some old hardware as it were). That doesn't mean it isn't a bug in Xorg though. Anything you can find I would highly appreciate.

Not that it matters, but I had a similar issue when Ubuntu 8.10 was installed on the same machine. Except it was the reverse, every once in a while when I would boot the screen wouldn't initialize, but I still heard the startup sounds and such.

There is a possiblity that it's the lcd on the laptop, but I can still run XPpro without any issues... Just trying to learn, it's not a huge issue.

Thanks, I appreciate the fast reply.

I've seen this on Radeon Xpress 200M (RS480) with the radeon driver. Is this your chip?
