Blank console on boot??

i just upgraded from 2.6.8.1 to 2.6.9. I compiled a whole new kernel instead of patching 2.8.6.1. However, when i boot to 2.6.9 the console is blank. No boot messages nothing. If i blindly enter my user/pass i can start x and all is fine. Any ideas?

edit /etc/lilo.conf, comment out all vga entrys. Then remove the comment on vga = normal. this should work, it sounds like you just forgot to compile frame buffer in....
