black screen with new kernel.

I need to compile a 2.6.X kernel but I do not know why everytime I do it it wont boot...lilo screens apears and after I choose kernel 2.6.X, it will start loading the kernel; however, instead of showing the console(the one you see while slackware is booting) it will show just a back screen...

I have tried several kernels and followed several "howtos" but same result.

infact, I I've done 'make oldconfig' but no luck.

Any ideas what is causing this? and how can I solve it

PS: I do not want to use the /test kernel (2.6.13).

Where did you get the kernel config file that you used for the "make oldconfig"?

from /usr/src/linux-2.4.31 (I have also used the .config from 2.4.32 but same result)

Try using the .config file file from 2.6.13 instead.

Using a config file from a 2.4 kernel to configure a 2.6 kernel doesn't strike me as something that's likely to work.

This is a common problem when you first start compiling 2.6 kernels, don't worry: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...461#post660461

You're getting the black screen (usually) because you didn't configure a framebuffer device. Double check your build out and ensure you've got a framebuffer being built.

You may also want to add something similar to the following:
Quote:
image = /vmlinuz
root = /dev/hda1
label = BSOD
read-only
vga = normal
Always nice to have a fall-back for the black screen of doom.

Cheers

I cant make it work... I do not know what I'm doing wrong.

I followed the link gbonvehi posted and no luck.

I got the 2.6.17.1 .config file from my centOS server, changed few things but did not work

EDIT:

problem fixed. thanks to the dude who sent me the .config file
