Black screen on Slack 12.1 and google telling me I have a virus!
Hi, guys, it's me again.
Have very strange problems. Yesterday suddenly my Slackware showed me blackscreen with my mouse pointer frozen. Keyboard wasn't reacting as well as the mouse. Restarted the old-fashion way. Checked dmesg, couldn't see something wrong and it was actually showing only what I am seeing while Linux loads. Today this happend twice already. At the same time, whenever I try to open google, it's telling me that my request looks like a virus or a spyware action and telling me to check my system or network. It was giving me the chance to enter a code and continue and now it stopped giving me even that. Can't use google at all. Is it really possible that I have a virus on my machine? No windows on it, only Slack. I'm in a network with a Windows machine but there is no problem with google there. |
Have you been compiling things that you have no idea what they are? What are the last things you have downloaded then run? WHAT is telling you that you have a virus, Firefox? Konqueror? When problem solving be very specific. We can't guess.
|
Have you checked for a rootkit ? With something like:
http://www.chkrootkit.org/ |
Ah.... And the paranoia sets in...
100:1 you don't have a virus. 10:1 you don't have an actual rootkit. Try not to make it a habit to listen to web browsers telling you that you have a virus. Especially on Windows. I do freelance computer repair and most of my work comes from people believing what their web browser tells them. What I would do is to create an entirely new profile and see if that fixes it. If so, try deleting all your cache files. If that doesn't work, try deleting ALL private info. If that still doesn't work then just move both bookmark files over to your new profile and wash your hands of it. And, if it turns out I'm wrong, then I might have to rethink my complacent security views under Linux. But, until that happens, I'm not likely to. ;) |
Ok, Opera is what I am using. Don't like Firefox or Konqueror. I don't care if Google is threatening me, I care that is stopping me to use it. It was also suggesting to get rid f the cookies but it didn't work. I'll try what you are suggesting now, jong357, will check for rootkit too.
And actually my biggest problem is that black screen. I haven't compiled anything. The only thing was removing Audacious and setting it again with two lines difference for being able t read CUE files, which I have done before on both Slack 12 and Ubuntu 7.10. P.S. Rootkit - all fine. Firefox is making the same, the Windows machine is showing same problem now. Will make a full scan on it tonight, since we are in a network. |
Can you put up a screenshot of this error/virus message?

This is it.

I think we talking about this issue.

:D Yop, same thing. I'm gonna leave Google for now, until it decides that my system is OK and will use Yahoo.
But my biggest issue is that blackscreen. Can't see something wrong in syslog, dmesg and messages. Maybe I am missing something. Any place else I should check? The first time I thought for a moment it's the X that made the problem. But I wasn't able to do anything. Both keyboard and mouse were frozen. Only blackscreen with a few vertical line and a frozen mouse pointer. |
Well... It seems to be some sort of issue upstream on your network if all computers are affected... I have no idea why any particular router settings might be triggering it but there it is. Doing anything weird like bridging connections? Any "non-standard" setup on your network?
That's what I'd be looking at I guess. |
Yeah, google sometimes does that, I'm getting it on my farmer boxes when they're running google scrapers, there's no virus, I think that you should contact them and/or your ISP to solve this.
As for your black screen problem, here's my 2 cents :twocents: , did you check it to see if it's overheating? |

I have the same problem with a new install of 12.1.
After a few minutes if I am scrolling a long text file in kwrite the computer locks up and only a hard reboot works. If after 10+ minutes of idle screen goes black and locks up. All power, screensaver, etc turned off. I have 12.0 and mandriva. 12.0 and 12.1 are on same hd. No problems with either. JoAnne |
I couldn't detect any sequence in this. The last time when I happened, I wasn't even using the computer, was watching movie on the other one. The previous time it happened during a long talk on Skype. Don't remember the first two.
Is there any log about reaching the critical level of temperature? I'm not sure if this is the problem, but it's worth trying it. The regular checks now show varying between 59 and 72 degrees C. The critical level is 100 C. |
The question is why does google think you're a virus ?
I have a hunch they're trying to cover some security hole in their servers, or maybe they're the ones who are infected with a virus. Maybe I should just stop using google. But I've tried many other search engines, and they just suck in comparison. Does anyone know of better search engines ? ask.com (askjeves) is usually a decent replacement, but others are just crappy |
