Bizarre endless login loop

I just installed Slackware 10.1, and everything seemed to be going fine. The install proceeded without any problems, and I rebooted as instructed.

However, upon logging in initially as root, something really weird has been happening. I see:

Welcome to Linux 2.4.29 (tty1)

daughter login: STOPPING server from pid file /var/run/mysql/mysql.pid

34:31 mysqld ended

Welcome to Linux 2.4.29 (tty1)

daughter login: root
Linux 2.4.29
Last login: Wed Apr 6 20:25:30 -0500 2005 on tty1.
You have mail.

(QOTD)

Welcome to Linux 2.4.29 (tty1)

daughter login: _

And no matter how many times I try to log in, it just takes me right back to the login prompt.

Any idea on why this is happening? I tried reinstalling, and no dice. With or without a root password, same thing happens.

The mysql ends because by default there are no databases created (read the instructions on /etc/rc.d/rc.mysqld to create them).
I remember the endless loop happened to me once when I touch some of my login files but I've never seen that behaviour "by default".

Thanks for the insight.

One problem, though, is that I can't even get into create anything, even if I knew how to do the SQL thing.

Hmm...do you remember what login files you altered, or how you did so, to get the loop?

Is this something that could be fixed with a LiveCD boot and some tweaking?

It was something I was doing at my .bashrc file.
But as you said it was a vanilla install maybe it's some software that was bad installed, very weird to see this behaviour without touching anything.

happened to me too, when I accidently deinstalled the "shadow"-package. (http://www.slackware.com/pb/showdesc...-4.0.3-i486-11)

What helped was connecting via ssh and installing it again.

Excellent, a lead.

Okay, 2 questions:

1. Do you think this is the same issue? Remember this is immediately after a fresh install.

2. If so, how would I go about reinstalling via SSH? There is currently no root password specified, and SSH login seems to want one. I'd also need instructions on the actual installation.

Thanks much.

Any other ideas or suggestions are welcome and will be repaid with my evil minionship.
