rokytnji, yes before anyone posts output, I'd ask they either get latest git version, or use pinxi -U to update, which also updates from latest git version. Releases come all the time during beta so assume you are out of date before posting -zv8 output.

The -w/W was just a bug I introduced by accident a few releases ago, that was pointed out by an ubuntu user, trivial to correct.

rokytnji, since you are using a sysvinit system, can you do me a favor, this issue has come up in another context on another issue, show this:

Code:
strings /sbin/init | grep -iE 'version\s+[0-9]'
The question has come up about the fact that up to 3 init systems can use that at that point of init tests in pinxi, so I'd like to see the full output of that command. If you don't have strings installed, don't worry about, unless you want to install it.

mralk3, one glitch I see there, can you show the output of:

Code:
cat /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/product_name
that white space and those ' ' shouldn't be there in Machine ... product: ' ' output, this may be a filter issue, but I'd have to see the string value to know for sure.

The manufacturer of my laptop did not enter any value for some reason. I got this laptop from ZaReason, the model is a "Strata 7440". Here is the output anyway.

Code:
$ cat /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/product_name
' '
As you can see:

Code:
$ sudo cat /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/product_family
To be filled by O.E.M.

To be filled by O.E.M., there are many variants on that theme. That's a common type value internally, pinxi filters that out since it's junk data, but it must have left a space, ok, thanks for confirming. Something must have left a space in that filtering, I'll fix that. And ' ' should be filtered out too, that's an oversight. If you look at the filters in pinxi, cleaner and dmi_cleaner, you'll see a good cross section of the range of junk data that pinxi removes.

2.9.00-455-p hopefully has the space issue corrected the cleaner/filter functions neglected to trim white space as the last test on the cleaning, that might be all it was.

I've been lurking and following along on my Sager Laptop.

Very nice work !

Q[1] - Being old and set in my ways, I like Pure-D English Units. Is there a way to get Temps as Degrees F ?

Q[2] - I've not looked at the code in pinxi but where does it get my location for the weather option ?

Taylor TX is about 15 miles east ... close but I wonder if it could be closer to home ?

Thanks !

Note: I following this thread, I installed hddtemp from SBo and then added two entries to /etc/hddtemp/hddtemp.db for my Samsung SSD and NVME Drives:
Code:
#
# kjh was  here
#
"Samsung SSD 850 PRO" 190 C "Samsung SSD 850 PRO"
"SAMSUNG MZHPV512HDGL"                                  194  C  "Samsung SM951 512gb"
#
# kjh was there

Here is a session:

Code:

I think I may have found an issue with the --output json and --output-file. I am using perl-JSON-XS to test. The file path must be the full path in order to write the JSON to a file. I know some users would expect the full path to be a requirement, but I am sure someone out there will try to run pinxi like example #1:

Example #1
Code:
mralk3@slack64-current:~$ ls $PWD
inxi/
mralk3@slack64-current:~$ echo $PWD
/home/mralk3
mralk3@slack64-current:~$ perl inxi/pinxi --output json --output-file test.json
Error 47: The output directory path is not writable, or no file name was included:
Path given: test.json
mralk3@slack64-current:~$ ls
inxi/
The next few examples show pinxi working as expected with the full path:
Code:
mralk3@slack64-current:~$ perl inxi/pinxi --output json --output-file ./test.json
Writing json data to: ./test.json
Data written successfully.
Code:
mralk3@slack64-current:~$ perl inxi/pinxi --output json --output-file $PWD/test2.json
Writing json data to: /home/mralk3/test2.json
Data written successfully.
Code:
mralk3@slack64-current:~$ perl inxi/pinxi --output json --output-file $HOME/test3.json
Writing json data to: /home/mralk3/test3.json
Data written successfully.
Here is what was written:
Code:
mralk3@slack64-current:~$ ls
inxi/  test.json  test2.json  test3.json
EDIT:
I just noticed you merged inxi-perl branch into master, and the issue is present here also.

It would be very helpful for distribution packagers if you could make a tarball release on the GitHub page (or at least a git tag). As you can see here the SlackBuilds maintainer for inxi is using an Arch Linux community source to distribute for Slackware. This is not ideal.

Worked once. Then

Code:

[sudo] password for harry:

Starting download of man page file now.
Skipping man download because branch version is being used.
harry@biker:~
$ pinxi -W 79772
Error 45: Error opening file: /home/harry/.local/share/pinxi/weather-79772.txt
Error: Permission denied
I could chown weather-79772.txt. Just wondering why I have to. I did a chown earlier because the the contents in the pinxi folder in /home/harry/.local/share/pinxi was permission denied ealier also. After I was done updating.

Root terminal is no problem

@ kjhambrick

After reading pinxi -h help file in terminal. It looks like the upper case W is used for location. I posted 2 location commands for local pecos texas weather. I never bother with the longitude or latitude commands. So I use these instead also for local.

Code:
harry@biker:~
$ su
Password:
root@biker:/home/harry# pinxi -W pecos,tx
Weather:
  Conditions: 57 F (14 C) - Clear Time: Tue 20 Mar 2018 06:33:45 PM CDT
root@biker:/home/harry# pinxi -xxx -W pecos,tx
Weather:
  Conditions: 57 F (14 C) - Clear Wind: From the North at 4 MPH Humidity: 32%
  Pressure: 30.15 in (1021 mb) Dew Point: 28 F (-2 C) Location: Pecos, Tx
  Altitude: 787.3 m Time: Tue 20 Mar 2018 06:34:16 PM CDT
  Observation Time: March 20, 1:15 PM CDT
anyways. I mentioned I did chown on some things. Here they are. Because root owned them earlier. The 2 top files are my edits.

Code:
harry@biker:~/.local/share/pinxi
$ ls -l
total 16
-rw-r--r-- 1 harry harry  255 Mar 20 10:42 location-main.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 harry harry 3327 Mar 20 10:42 weather-32.4331-97.5390.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 root  root  1098 Mar 20 13:25 weather-79772.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 root  root  1098 Mar 20 13:33 weather-pecos-tx.txt
Basically. Everytime I run a different weather syntax. A new file is created and then only owned by root. I bet there is rule included for this some in here.

Code:
harry@biker:~
$ locate pinxi
/home/harry/.local/share/pinxi
/home/harry/.local/share/pinxi/location-main.txt
/home/harry/.local/share/pinxi/weather-32.4331-97.5390.txt
/usr/local/bin/pinxi
Probably the /usr/bin location. Since it sits in the / section.

Edited root terminal readouts because clickable email contact url link was included in readout .

Forum added [EMAIL] my email address [ / Email] brackets.
