Best Webmail?
I'm currently running Slackware 10.0 with sendmail. I use pop3 and smtp with outlook for email.
I would like to add webmail to check mail from outside the network and still be able to use outlook inside the network. What would be my best choice for webmail and once added would I have to change my current configuration? I have read several of the other threads on here but want to get a good idea what my best opions are and hopefully the least changes to the current system. I do however want a good webmail programs so thats why I put this to all of you. Thanks for the help!! |
Your best bet would actually be to switch over to IMAP instead of POP3. The only thing to worry about would be having enough disk space on the server.
That said, there's a bunch of webmails out there. I use IlohaMail, (http://www.ilohamail.org/) and don't have any complaints. Squirrelmail (http://www.squirrelmail.org/) is also very popular. |
Webmail
If I do change to IMAP will the mail have to move to a different location, need refresher on IMAP. Also I can setup a mailbox limit correct?
Thanks again! |
I've been using Fastmail for years and love it. It will allow you access it via POP3 or IMAP email clients. It can also be set up to pull mail from all your individual POP3 accounts, so they all show up in a single location.

With IMAP all the mail stays on the server, whereas pop3, as I'm sure you know, all the mail is downloaded to the users personal computer, the problem with this is when a user comes to use the webmail they will not be able to access their already seen mail because it isn't on the server, its on their own computer - they will be able to see new mails not yet downloaded.
I personally favour squirrelmail over IlohaMail, I haven't tried any other webmail apps so can't comment on them |
Webmail
I know the difference between them, I am just unsure if the location of the mail would have to change if I went to IMAP. I have read in some threads that different webmail programs can require diffent mail locations other then the current location via sendmail. Thanks,

Thanks for all the answers to my questions...
I have one more question... If I setup IMAP, will I have a problem with any one retriveing any pop3 mail left behing after the change over? My guess is no, but you know what they say... A stupid question is the one that wasn't asked! Thanks again for all the help from all of you! |

I run courier-imap which has both pop3 and imap servers.
For webmail I use squirrelmail ( which has just gone to 1.4.5 ) These are all using maildirs under /home/username For MTA I use postfix. Squirrelmail does not look as "pretty" as some of its rivals, but fancy graphics on the webpage has a performance cost |
