Best: Question about X and top
 

I started using slackware in about June. I was reading recently and I noticed that when I run the top command, no matter what user I am logged in as and using X, top says X is always being run by root instead of my current username. Is there a reason for this ? Secondly, how is it that root runs X when I am not logged in as root? I'm really confused about that part of it.

Do you boot in a graphical mode at boot time? That would determine why its being run as root instead of you as a user. If you use startx, should be running as your username, etc.

The Xfree86 binary is suid, so on execution it switches to the owner, which is root. That's the answer for your second question I think.

Yeah I use the startx command to start my gui. That's why I found it weird. THx for the replies, I appreciate it
