Gary,

Maybe I missed it, but how old are the kids?

Frozen Bubble is a huge hit in my family, as are the various Flash games at SesameStreet.com. I run some cool old DOS games in DOSbox, but all of this is appropriate for my son who just turned 4. Older kids would probably be bored stiff (except by Frozen Bubble, which is just plain cool!).

I'm rather fond of ZZT.

Anything made by Bill Kendrick tends to be quite good

Oh, and SuperTux, but that'd be a shameless plug.

When speaking of FPS.. I don't like the genre but it's good to mention OpenArena, although it's obvious that Nexuiz is better in many points.

The Grand Kids are 6-16 yrs but nieces & nephews are a lot older.
I'll look into 'Frozen Bubble', the screen shots look neat.

I've got a lot too look at from this thread. Everyone has been very helpful. I'm sure the boys will like the fps programs. I'll have to pass things by their Mom though.

I grabbed Nexiuz and tried it in single player. That is a tough one with some good graphics. No way I can go online with this yet. I am way too slow.

Well, here's my list (some already mentioned, a few are not fps)
Doom I, II, expansions, III
Quake I, II, III, IV
q3 engine: openarena, rtcw, urbanterror, quakelive
Misc: Nexuiz, warsow
Using wine/cedega: Starcraft+Expansion, WoW

Some are on SBo let me know if you need more info about them, install help, etc. (not including Wow, since I don't own it)

I'll edit this post if I remember other ones.

I'll put in another vote for frozen bubble which is in SBo it is an awesome game. My wife is heavily addicted to Shisen-Sho, I also like that one.

Another vote for Nexiuz
and Sauerbraten

Used to play Call of Duty 4 in Wine, I think all the other COD's work as well

If there are any Duke Nukem fans, eduke32 is in Slackbuilds.
There is the game engine, a hi-res pack and a demo .grp.
If you have a legal duke3d.grp file you can drop it in the folder that is made in your home folder after the game engine is started.
Note: you'll have to rename the .grp so it's lower case.
Concerning the hi-res pack.
There is a syntax error for the source and I've already emailed the dev who takes care of the build.
The only way I was able to get the source into the build folder was download it directly by just clicking the link.
I still wasn't able to mv or cp it to the build folder while logged into my user account even though I had su'd to root due to the syntax error.
I had to log out of user, back in as root and then was able to cp the source to the build folder.
I then logged back in as user and finished the build.
The game engine is set up to either use a mouse or joystick and does ok.
I'm to uncoordinated to use a mouse for gaming and don't own a joystick sooo.
I'll stick with Vavoom where I can use the arrow keys.

Pingus rocks!
It is a clone of Lemmings with penguins.

Xblast is a nice simple multiplayer game where you place bombs to blow each other up.

I haven't played it, but I watched the video on the Nexuiz site - nobody can move that fast! For me they'd have to make a "Nexuiz For The Over Sixties". A nice leisurely stroll, with opponents that were half asleep.

Nexuiz is pretty fast, but I am used to it as I played UT and COD multiplayers a lot in my college days.

There are lots of good ones, take a look at the pc list of speeddemosarchive. Speedrunning is fun if you enjoy single playing, check one of their videos.
