Becoming a Slacker!
I tried Slackware the othe day by installing it in my virtual machine. I was hooked! The non-X is great (even though I still like the Debian non-X) and the X was good also. Lots of good programs. I know have it installed on 1 laptop and 1 virtual machine. It could go on another laptop as well. My favorite thing is all of the development tools that come preinstalled, nice!

Have a look at src2pkg.
With that you can install almost anything :) All the distros have a disavantage - one is sort of locked into what is available in their repository. Slackbuilds is very good, but with src2pkg you can install anything that you can get to compile, as a package with two commands: Quote:
I really think that it could put to end the arguments that other distros have "better" package systems. Being able to install any program that can compile in an orderly way without having to wait for it to appear in a repository, or to go through the steps of building a slackbuild script, puts slackware back at the front of all the other distros, as far as I'm concerned. |
To add to the suggestions above, I've had good luck with rpm2tgz; I haven't had to use it more than a few times because I can usually find what I'm looking for on Slackbuilds, but, when I have used it, it has worked.

rpm2tgz is not something you should make a habit of using, new Slackers get the wrong idea about it thinking any rpm they find on the net can be converted to a working Slackware package by it.
