Beautiful Fonts in Slackware 13.1

This thread contains the cleartype-like freetype, cairo, libXft packages for 13.1. Please refer to "Beautiful Fonts in 12.1" http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...12-1-a-640468/ for more details.
The patches for freetype, cairo and libXft are all come from the thread above, with a little modification so libXft can be patched successfully.
You can find the patches and slackbuilds used for these packages, precompiled binaries as well.

slackbuilds including patches:
cairo: http://rapidshare.com/files/40350123...uilds.zip.html
freetype: http://rapidshare.com/files/40350140...uilds.zip.html
libXft: http://rapidshare.com/files/40350178...uilds.zip.html

precompiled packages:
cairo: http://rapidshare.com/files/40350199...486-3.txz.html
freetype: http://rapidshare.com/files/40350220...486-1.txz.html
libXft: http://rapidshare.com/files/40350234...486-1.txz.html

The cairo, freetype, fontconfig packages of dugan's work perfectly, you can find them here:
http://www.vcn.bc.ca/~dugan/slackware-fonts/

I recommend using libXft with cleartype patch from arch, following is the slackbuild and binaries:
libXft slackbuild:
http://hotfile.com/links/51499936/35...slackbuild.zip
precompiled package:
http://hotfile.com/dl/51499758/148fc...486-1.txz.html

You can find the snapshots at #17.

How are these different from Dugan's packages?

dugan 06-28-2010 09:05 AM

Was there a problem with my libXft SlackBuild?

I've looked through his, and they specifically build for Cleartype-style rendering. So they're closer to the packages that Daedra started the thread to post.

The libXft SlackBuild is borrowed from the one in official slackware dvd, with a little modification. :)

zhoun 06-28-2010 11:03 AM

I just install the 4 packages from dugan's page yesterday, with cleartype style.
A script need a minor patch to compile, i forgot which one it is.

dugan 06-28-2010 11:28 AM

Zhoun, I'll look into it this evening (Pacific Standard Time).

I haven't actually tested building the current version for Cleartype-rendering, so more details before then would be appreciated.

rmjohnso 06-28-2010 12:49 PM

I'm running dugan's packages on my Slackware64 13.1 install with no problems.

What did you change that is different from what dugan and daedra changed? What is your "little modification?"

Daedra 06-28-2010 03:41 PM

I just looked over them too, It looks like there the cleartype patches available over at arch. I myself use these patches since I prefer the cleartype look to the ubunutu look, but to each his own. The only difference I can see to Dugan's build is that the libXft package does contain a "cleartype" patch while Dugan's libXft build only seems to supply a "ubuntu" patch. There has been discussion in the past on whether or not the libXft cleartype patch is really needed. IMO it is, for my tastes it makes a difference. I remember now that I used Dugan's build but I had to add in the patch for libXft. Maybe Dugan can update his build to include the arch cleartype patch? :).

http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/li...leartype.patch

dugan 06-28-2010 04:26 PM

"My" builds are straight ports of the Gentoo ebuilds. The libXft SlackBuild doesn't include the Cleartype patch because the ebuilds don't.

I'll be happy to link to esom's though.

Zhoun, if I get home and find out that my SlackBuilds work with USE=Cleartype, then I'll call you out for spreading FUD. If I find out that they don't, then I'll call you out for finding a solution and not posting it.

Ah, that makes sense. It certainly is debatable but I think patching libXft does make a difference as far as cleartype rendering is concerned. Although it seems like most people prefer Ubunutu style anyway.

zhoun 06-28-2010 07:04 PM

I downloaded them and run build again.
The libXft build script didn't get the real ARCH and just use i486, and my ARCH is x86_64. So it complained and not compile.

They did for me (32 bit).

I haven't tried the extra patch to libXft, but I'm not convinced that it's needed. With your packages compiled using the 'cleartype' option, my screen fonts look great. It can't get much better, IMO...

dimm0k 06-29-2010 12:30 PM

I'm actually having some issues getting the script from dugan's site to create the libXft package. I'm running Slackware64 13.1 and of the 4 packages required for subpixel rendering, libXft is the only one that won't go through. Here is what I see after executing libXft.SlackBuild.

Did you define, or export the correct arch? Shouldn't really blindly execute a script as root without first inspecting it ;)

dugan no doubt has our best interest in mind. Thanks BTW, my fonts look beautiful!!!

zhoun 06-29-2010 07:11 PM

export ARCH=x86_64
and run libXft.SlackBuild again.

The script can't recognize your corrent ARCH.
