"bash-4.3$" instead of user@host:/path$

This is a problem with bash I have had before and never knew how to fix, now it comes up again after a new install of Slackware 14.2: Whatever konsole terminal app I use, I have the following problems:
  • bash-4.3$ instead of user@host:/path$
  • no colors
  • does not seem to recognize root pwd on sudo

However, this all seems to resolve when I go root with su.

Can anyone help please, this is quite annoying.
Thanks very much for any input.

You are running a non-login shell. The easiest way to fix this is to either source /etc/profile in a .bashrc file or change konsole to start a bash login shell. I don't remember the exact location in konsole, but it's in the settings and it lists /bin/bash, you just need to change it to /bin/bash -l and it'll be as you expect.

EDIT: Maybe Settings -> Edit Current Profile or Manage Profiles...

Great, thanks a lot for the immediate help, /bin/bash -l did the trick for the display and colors.
However, sudo still doesn't recognize my password and I'm forced to use su. Is there an easy way to solve this too?

Thanks.

You probably need to edit /etc/sudoers (use the visudo command) to add your user account to the sudoers list. Alternatively, add your user to the sudo group and make sure the following line is not commented with visudo:

Code:
%sudo ALL=(ALL) ALL

Just found this before coming back here:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...orking-536458/

So, added
Code:
%wheel ALL=(ALL) ALL
to /etc/sudoers and ran
Code:
gpasswd -a username wheel
Works now, thanks Montagdude.
