Bad CDs make my system hangs forever
I have Slackware current (not up-to-date, but way off 10.2) with 2.6.13 default kernel and hal, dbus and udev from a freerock instalation.
The problem is that when I try to copy a CD or DVD, sometimes, on certain discs, my system hangs. I cannot flip to another console, the CTRL+ALT+DEL seems to respind after 3-4 minutes, but cannot reboot, since a specific process hangs and the only solution is reboot. I thought that the CDs were scratched, but it works fine on other distros on other computers. I talked with 3 other people using Slackware and they all have the same problem, but they don't know the answer. It's kind of frustarting when suddenly you have to reboot, and loose all in-progress work, especially when it's about Slackware...

Have you tried swapping your CD drive with another to see if its that.
Sounds like some kind of hardware/interrupt problem for it to freeze the entire system.

I've never experienced such problem in Slackware. I remember exactly when I once tried to read scratched CD on Win2k box and it regulary locked up this system and when I tried to mount this same CD on Slack, it correctly failed with "invalid media or format" message after a few seconds.
It may be a problem with kernel driver or caused by non-official software from FRG like mentioned hald - it may consume all abailable processor time or may produce heavy memory leaks (do you see some frequent HDD activity on lock up ?) Before kernel solving I'd suggest to stop messagebus, hald, famd and/or umount automount and try again. If you have the possibility I would also try to ssh in from another machine.

Well, I was thinking that hald or something from FRG could cause this, since this behaviour was never spottet before I installed FRG, as long as I remember. And yes, the HDD is very active, but this be caused by the copy process, wich uses the HDD. Also, the delay of CTR+ALT+DEL and others could be also cause by a memory leak.
I will do what you said (stop hald and others) and they report the situation.

I suffered a similar problem on my slackware box when reading cdroms. After I replaced the drive with a new dvd-+rw one, everything smoothed out.

Yeap, this seemed be the problem. I have a shiny new dvd-rw unit, and now everything is ok.
