Hey all,

After about 4 years of life taking up all of my time, i'm back to linux, after dancing with windows and mac. i've missed linux, but haven't had the time until now. i was a dedicated slack user, and i think the last was 10? maybe a little newer, but that would be it.
I'm seeing mixed reviews on 14, but i figure i'll start there. it's as good a place as any.

The "mixed" part in "mixed reviews" is what the sometimes clueless reviewers on Distrowatch and Pro-Linux.de couldn't figure out.

All I can tell you is that I have put it on 6 different computers with no issues what ever. It is by far the best Slackware
ever in my opinion. The oldest computer is a p4 2.53 gig with 768 memory and it works fine. Try it you will like it!

Don't worry about the reviews, they have to pick on something and usually they are things the user doesn't like rather than things that don't work.

The only valid complaint so far is that the modules in rc.modules should be loaded with the '-b' option:

I've been porking with linux since 2005 and since then every other distribution kept me coming back to Slackware until present day. The only place where Slackware isn't installed are usually servers on which I'm very comfortable with Debian (+ these choices are usually beyond me and I cannot change them). You will find that in the last 4 years absolutly nothing changed. Well, nothing good at least. Slack is as rock solid and as stable as the first time I saw the vibrant blue on KDE 3.something quite some time ago. And to this day it remains THE most snappy distro I ever encountered. Hell, even DSL isn't as snappy.

Although in reality, I think the two main reasons I stay with slack are:
* the ūberfriendly, smart, witty and helpful people surrounding it (no, seriously, slack has one of the best communities of any distro)
* it somehow always works when everything else fails

thanks for the welcome to all! abe, you speak the words i spoke for years when using slack. "it just works". i was surprised how much is now included in 14. where i use to have to install and configure things like a vga monitor, asla and resolv.conf, they now just work out of the box. i will say it's amazing to find how much i have forgotten in the last 4 years. it's slowly coming back tho, and it's pretty neat being back with slack. i'll check the links you posted. Thanks again!

We also now have sbopkg http://www.sbopkg.org/. It allows for installing multiple packages.

LOL, I never used slackpkg. Once I found slackbuilds.org I thought I was in geek heaven. Then I found slackermedia and sbopkg. I hit geek heaven.

slackpkg has nothing to do with sbopkg or slackbuilds.org. slackpkg manages upgrading and installing/removing packages from the Slackware-repository. slackbuilds.org (sbopkg) makes packages available which are not in the Slackware-repository.

ok, i found my original account, so i am going to resume using this account instead of jay125. hopefully i can delete jay125.

Markus and JJ, i've now picked up on sbopg. still have a lot to remember, but even spending an hour or two a night is really refreshing my memory. i'm not a power user by any means, just a hobbyist/enthusiast, but i am very impressed with slack 14.
i've actually managed to compile and install, which for me is a rather big step, since the last time i did this was 2008. i still have a few tweaks to figure out as far as permissions and i need to get the wireless going as well. but as i said, so far so good!
i also made this forum my first stop because i know from past experience i can rely on all the experience that exists here, so for that i thank you in advance!
