Automatic login to X without XDM?
 

I have just set up Slack 10 on an old 233MHz and 32MB machine and want a very small, simple, quick system just to write things. It needs no safety logins or anything as there will be nothing on it but Slack (home folder is on a memory disk) and it will not connect to the internet. I have pared it to the bone as far as I can but would like to be able to go straight to the user's .xsession file without having to login thorugh XDM or use GDM's autologin (as it is too slow and power-hungry). I cannot find a way to automate the XDM login. Can this be done, or can the display manager be bypassed altogether? I just want the user to switch the machine on and start writing a few moments later.

Thanks scubee. The first one did the trick. Second one was not really what I needed and the third tried to work but kept being unable to find programs like xinit etc. Every experimental alteration I made simply changed the file it could not find, so I guess there was some constantly changing problem with path variables. My wife can now simply turn the thing on and the next thing she knows she can start typing.

not the securest (?) of boxens i would imagine, but then again, like you said, won't be connected to anything. :D
