Automatic E-mail check

I'm having a little problem(newbie ), I have slackware 10.1, kde-3.4 and kernel 2.6.10 . My default E-mail client is thunderbird 1.0.2, and I pretty much like it, but I wan't to get notified when I get mail(maybe check for new messages every 3 minutes) but I have to run thunderbird manually everytime I start my computer, to get this feature, any ideas how I can fix this... maybe always get thunerbird in "system tray" when I run the computer, how? can I get popup when I get mail?

Greeting
Siggiae

There is one extension for Thunderbird under windows called minimizetotray
http://minimizetotray.mozdev.org/
it only works under windows.

Under KDE, I hope you can use any panel plugin that comes with KDE to get alert on new mail (I've one in my GNOME) then start Thunderbird to read the mail.
