Audio issues on Dell XPS 9343 running current

I'm running into an audio issue on my Dell XPS 9343 running slackware64-current.

When I boot my system and launch pavucontrol/alsamixer it launches normally, it continues to work using Firefox. However if I launch another media app (parole, vlc, etc) the audio no longer works and if I go back to pavucontrol/alsamixer I get

Code:
alsamixer
shm_open() failed: No such file or directory
ALSA lib pulse.c:243:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Protocol error
I tired to follow https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php..._13_%282015%29 without much success.

If I add the conf file
Code:
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
options snd_hda_intel index=1,0
I get sound in vlc and parole again, but can't open the mixer, play videos in Firefox if I have another media app open.

this bug seems relevant https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1255070

I'm pretty sure it was working fine until the 4.4 kernel update so I'm guessing its the I2S mode switch and the audio is defaulting to HDMI out.

Code:
lsmod | grep snd
snd_hda_codec_hdmi     39331  1
snd_hda_codec_realtek    69873  1
snd_hda_codec_generic    61125  1 snd_hda_codec_realtek

snd_hwdep               6656  1 snd_hda_codec
snd_pcm                92738  4 snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_core
snd_timer              21853  1 snd_pcm
snd                    68877  15 snd_hwdep,snd_timer,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_pcm,snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel
soundcore               6876  1 snd
Code:
aplay -l

Can you post the output of the following?

Code:
lspci -k | grep -iA 3 audio
But based on your aplay -l, I don't think it is defaulting to your hdmi as your card0 is listed as your analog device.

It's looking like this is related to firejail. I had been playing around with firejail the last bit and it seems like its interfering with the connection to pulse using the default profile. I'll post back when I have time to figure out a solution.

This solved the problem

https://firejail.wordpress.com/support/known-problems/

$ mkdir -p ~/.config/pulse
$ cd ~/.config/pulse
$ cp /etc/pulse/client.conf .
$ echo "enable-shm = no" >> client.conf
