Hi All,
I'm using an ATI Radeon Mobility 200M integrated with my laptop.

I have been able to install the ATI supplied kernel modules and X works using the fglrx module however if I enable DRI so that I have acceleration my laptop screen blanks up and the system becomes unresponsive and I have to hard boot the box.

I bet you see mesa there.

Yea Mesa is showing up in the output.

If I comment out the loading of libdri.a I get 2d, if I leave it uncommented and change no_dri to yes it loads with 2d. If I leave both as they are stock, uncommented and and no_dri set to no I get the lock up. I have googled over and over and over ;-) and I have tried all the troubleshooting steps I have found. One was to uncomment virtual 1280 1024, when I do that I get a kernel oops with memory mapping errors.

i coudn't use acceleration until i didn't enable posix which wasn't not enabled per default in slackware 10.2. if you are using default kernel, then that could be a problem. do you have something like this in fstab file?

when not, add it and try then.

Thats one of the things I ran across during my google searches (sorry for not mentioning it). I have enabled it with no change. I have downgraded the kernel to 2.6.14 after finding out over at the rage3d forums that there is an memory mapping issue in regards to the ATI drivers in 2.6.15 and I'm no longer geting the kernel oops but now I'm getting the X server dying with a signal 8, I haven't found much about sig 8's yet. I have downgraded the X.org packages to 6.8.1 and no change with that either.

Hmm a quick search shows that sig 8 is a floating point exception error. It has to do with Posix shared memory but I haven't been able to track that down yet. I can't wait to get this figured out (if I do) as I'm going to document the crap out of it

Yea I compiled in Posix shared memory. I also disabled DRI and AGP (after much googling) I later found out through trial and error that AGP needs to be enabled but DRI does not. I found over on the Gentoo forums a tip that has resolved my issue and DRI is now working. I have a Radeon Mobility 200M, apparently there is a bug in the ATI drivers that requires you to change SidePort to UMA in the BIOS. I don't know what these specific features are for yet but they're related to the video in some way.

[To Recap for other frustrated Slackware users]

1. Do NOT use the 2.6.15 kernel as there are memory mapping issues.
2. If you are using a Mobility 200M, boot into the BIOS of your laptop and change sideport to UMA <this is key>
3. Do NOT uncomment Virtual 1280 1024 in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

AMD/ATI finally fixed a year old problem with the 200M driver so try it again. The drivers I've verified work are version 8.32.5 and 8.33.6 on a Compaq R4000( same as HP zv6000 ).

The only thing 'extra' in xorg.conf was to disable the composite extention like this:
