ATi Radeon drivers in Slackware 10

I'm trying to install the ati binary driver for XFree 4.3 in Slackware 10....

First I converted the rpm to a tgz with the rpm2tgz tool and then used installpkg on the file to install the driver. No problems so far.

Also, I managed to get the driver configured. the glxgears test program also works at full speed.
However, when I try using the fglrxinfo.... I am told that

Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
display: :0.0 screen: 0

and no games (such as Wolfenstein ET) work properly. Neither does the fgl_glxgears work properly

Anyone managed to do an install of these drivers and get them to work? Or can someone tell me how to solve this issue?
