ATI Radeon 9200 OpenGL: Artifacts in addition to actual image display...

Hi there,

I just got the ATI Radeon driver version 3.11.1 working in one of my Slackware 10.0 boxes. It seems to work, but running the OpenGL screensavers in KDE I see some artifacts: On the right side of my screen there are diffuse mirror images of the actual objects displayed. By 'diffuse' I mean that there only a few pixels, but the mirror is good enough to resemble the original image, without too much phantasy.

Has anyone seen this, too? How can I get rid of this effect?

Thanks,

gargamel

i got my 9600 video card working on slac 10 but i haven't set up a screen saver, i'll do that later on and i'll let you know if i'm having the same issue. The driver version i have install is the same one as u. I really doubt i have the same issue coz i've been playin unrealtournament 2004 and it looks great.

Ok, I am looking forward to your report.

First questions would be: Is my problem caused by software or hardware?
I have no idea how to make that decision.

But I'd like to add that the problem only appears with the OpenGL screen savers. All the other KDE screen savers I tried run smoothly.

Try getting into xorg.conf and downgrading/disabling some accelerations. (AGP from 4 to 2, disable FastWrite, etc.) Also, try changing resolution to a 1024x768 or 800x600 and see if the problem goes away. I would say it has something to do with the way your driver is set up.

Thanks, suslik. At 1024x768 everything is clean and fast. However, I would have thought that a graphics card with 128 MB DDR RAM should be capable of doing a proper OpenGL job at 1280x1024 without problems; seems I was wrong...

Once I have time I'll fiddle with the other options you mention, and see if I can get proper OpenGL working at 1280x1024.

Until then I accept the artifacts --- they are only in my screen savers, and for everything else I like to have 1280x1024... ;-)

If changing the resolution removed defects - its either
1. A defect in ATI propriatory driver , or
2. You applied incorrect/too agressive acceleration settings.

In your case, I would concider it a driver bug. See if it was reported to ATI.
