ATI Radeon 9000 (FireGL 250) ?driver?

HW:
Dell Inspiron 8500, ATI Mobility Radeon9000 (FireGL 250 v1), i845 chipset

SW: Slack-11 with my own 2.6.19.1 kernel, all graphics stuff compiled as modules.

So I thought my install and everything was going well, until i learned about these proprietary drivers from ATI. This is the first time I've tried them and I can say I'm unimpressed

I am struggling with using the ati-driver-installer.sh. It seems that I run the installer, and everything goes along smoothly, but when I run aticonfig, it hardly changes my original xorg.conf file. The when I startx afterwards I get:

(EE) no devices found

Which is odd because lspci still recognizes the graphics card. (at least i think thats odd, but what do i know)

I'm not at home now but will post lspci, glxgears, glxinfo & xorg.conf when I can. I have searched/read the enabling DRI thread by cwwilson but none of my keywords produced anything. Also of course googled for my HW and seen some xorg.conf that seem WAY different than what aticonfig is producing for me.

any tips?

I have the same graphic card in my Acer 1603LC laptop and using DRI. I have no problems enabling it following this guide

I have configured my card this way in Debian, slax, Slacware 11 (huge26.s), Ubuntu....

And when I run "glxgears" (1024x728 24bits):

7566 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1513.032 FPS
7782 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1556.356 FPS
2480 frames in 5.0 seconds = 495.639 FPS (Full Screen)

update:

1- removed ati drivers
2- reinstalled x11 and x11-devel
3- recompiled kernel,modules
4- run xorgsetup and edit subsequent xorg.conf as needed

glxgears (1680x1050) < 830fps, < 60fps fullscreen
(1024x768) <930fps, < 160fps fullscreen

my xorg.conf

you might notice in xorg.conf i have some options commented out, when using these they seemed to kill my x server - but i verified them with my HW docs before setting. or i had changed them and they were defaults anyway (reading man radeon)

DRI is enabled.

what i am wondering is do these #s sound respectable given my hardware? I'm not a gamer or anything, but I was thinking that it might point a clue to how well my kernel is working?

many thanks!

p.s. i also noticed that packages.slackware has an ATI patched xorg package, has anyone experience with that packaged and this/similar card?

The patched XORG radeon drivers in /extra are for peple who experience crashes with the standard ones. They dont provide improved performance and if your X11 doesn't crash, there is no need to try them.
