ATI Radeon 8500 TV Out
 

Anyone had any luck with this? ATI's driver says it only supports RADEON 9700/9800 boards.

Throught some extensive googling I've found

which seems to be my best bet. Here is where I am stuck..

The TV out instructions say: "Theater_out is included into ati.2 driver when the tv_output branch is selected in the CVS repository.
After downloading ati.2, proceed with the usual installation procedure."

I don't know enough about CVS to understand what that means. Any help appreciated.

I have binaries of XFree86 4.3.0 compiled with theater_out support for Debian. If you want them I can put them on a webserver for you. I use them on a Radeon 7200 and it works great, don't know about 8500 though.

Wow cool. would that work on slackware? I'd need a STEP by STEP. and i mean baby steps.. :)

try ATI's drivers, which have this option.

looks like a workaround however, is to use vesa instead of the ati or fglrx driver. This will provide TV out, and is suitable for movie viewing, but doesn't do much for the 3D side of things :)

Yes, VESA works. But to get both 3D and TV-out I think GATOS is your only hope at the moment. I can't get much time right now to help you on building your own XFree86 with GATOS drivers but maybe I can rip the binaries out of my DEB's and put them in a tarball instead. Might clutter your system if you install them though but if you make backups you can find out if it would be worth the job to build your own stuff (or you could also install Debian on another partition and test my DEB's as they are). It took me about 6 hours on a 700 MHz machine. :)

GATOS would be ideal, but installation is a bit advanced for me right now.. Perhaps I will be able to find a more step by step doc somewhere, as the instructions on the webpage require some knowledge that I don't have (YET).
