ATI problems....headache.

Well this is my first post so I will introduce myself.
My name is Brian and I am fairly new to Linux. For my computer I have an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, AMD Athlon 64 FX-55, ATI X700 pro..... Well my question is how to get the ATI driver "fglrx" to run with kernel 2.6.12.4. I have installed slamd64 as well as Slackware 10.2(with the 2.6 kernel) and nothing seems to work. I have seen patch after patch. I really want to utilize 64 bit. When I installed Slackware 10.2 with the 2.4 kernel the driver installed just fine. Any help at this point would be great.

Hi Brian. Welcome aboard. :)

I'm not going to answer your question directly. Rather, I am going to let you know how to find previous questions and answers about the ATI graphics cards. I'm not trying to be a jerk. It's just that this question gets asked about five times a day.

On the LQ page go to the right side of the page near the top and look under the main menu. The second link there is "Search". This will bring you to the advanced search for LQ. When you get to that page enter ATI as the search string, select "Search titles only", select "Previous week only" and press the search button at the bottom of the page. You will see many many entries. Most of them are nearly identical to yours.

As I say I don't want to be a jerk or to be unfriendly. I just thought "teach a man to fish..." etc.

Regards. :)

No problem. I was just frustrated with searching for solutions and nothing working.

Edit: I am a member of a few other boards so I understand the problem of questions being asked over and over again but this was kind of my last resort.

barn63:

You need to expand on what you've given us, it's not very useful so far.

Necessary information would be:

1) The exact video card you are using (not just the chipset)
2) What have you downloaded from the ATi website?
3) What did you do on Slackware to install fglrx? What patches were you applying, etc?
4) Likewise for Slamd64 - what have you done so far, etc. Also, have you installed cxxlibs5-3.3.4-x86_64-1 for Slamd64 beforehand?
5) What problem is Slamd64 reporting about trying to load the fglrx module?

Are you having a problem with compiling the module or just getting it to run? Have you changed your xorg.conf file to point to the proper driver?

Well what I have done so far is downloaded the .run file from ATI's website and tried to run it but it always says there are errors during isntallation. SO I downloaded the .rpm and converted it to a .tgz package and installed it. I changed directories to /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod and tried to run make.sh and it quits with an error about agpgart I believe. I am not sure what to do from here.
