ATI's x1000 series GPUs and Linux - Updated Drivers

I just found out that ATI has finally added support for more of their video cards in the Linux drivers. I had just recently purchased an ATI x1300 card, but ATI's drivers were outdated by almost 6 months. Needless to say, my card was not supported then but it's now supported. Now, I can start fully migrating to Slackware from Windows. It's going to be a long process because all of my games have to work under Slackware, too.

Hopefully the news of newly updated drivers from ATI will help others that were waiting in the wings.

Hector

Yeah, they finally work, well not perfectly, but it is pssoble to play some games under Linux. Though ATI really should add vpu recover function in linux too, because my pc crashed already twice due to the grahpicsadapter ( 1800 xl ) and absolutly nothing worked anymore ( I couldn't restart xserver I couldn't switch to a console, only a hardreset did it)
Since I encounter the same problems with windows I came to the conclusion that ATI just isn't able to produce really working drivers.

Well anyway, I'm still glad to finally being able to play UT2004 once again under Linux

Glad to hear you're back in gaming business.

I finally installed the driver this morning. Slackware is screaming fast with GUI stuff now. Much faster than my Windows setup on the same computer.

I've already downloaded the Doom 3 run file and will be installing that shortly.

Also, ran glxgears and far as I can tell, it's all good with the driver. I guess with gaming it could be a different story. I'll keep posting back on my experiences.

Yeah.
Have you ever tried to enbale transparency?
Since I use the ATI driver I can't use transparency anymore, because desktop looks kind of uhmm strange?

at last drivers for the X1x00 cards!

trouble getting mine to work perfectly, why cant they just use the old "fglrxconfig"!

i used the automatic method, and when i installed it the last message was "there was some errors during installtion" anyway i did "aticonfig --initial" and rebooted.

i then did 'startx' which the xserver did load but left me staring at a white screen. but by flcking between VTs eg flick to the VT used on " ctrl+alt F8" then back to "ctl+alt F7" the desktop would properly appear, once i had turned down the gamma which set way too high it looked well. the white screen happens every time i booted no matter what i have tried so far.

i thought the problems where due to a conflict between the inital VESA driver i had in my xorg.conf and atis driver but that didnt help. no DRI support

the error output from the fglrx-install.log

whoa, I forgot to run that command: aticonfig -initial. I just ran the auto installer then ran startx. I must've gotten a little impatient. LOL
